Let’s start with the basics! What is concealer?
A great question…what does concealer actually do?! Concealer is a product that helps with brightening certain parts of your face resulting in a bright and rejuvenated finish. Concealer is typically applied on top of foundation to brighten and conceal dark areas/imperfections around your face.

1. Hydration! Hydration! Hydration!
Makeup ALWAYS needs a prepped ready base that is hydrated for best results! Trust me on this, if you haven’t been prepping your skin before doing your makeup you’re going to see a HUGE result in your finish.
The reason for this is because dry skin can result in a splotchy and uneven finish, properly prepping your skin helps A TON!
To make sure your skin is ready for makeup follow these steps:
1. Wash your face: washing your face ensures that you’re starting with a clean and refreshed base, which is exactly what you’re skin needs before makeup!
2. Moisturize and apply sunscreen: Moisturizing your skin helps with having a smooth base for your makeup to work with. Once you’ve applied moisturizer apply sunscreen! Make sure to find one that is lightweight and preferably clear so you can avoid a white cast.
3. Prime: If you want to prime your skin, apply that now! This is so your makeup can properly sit on your skin for the day ahead. To learn more about primer and how to use it, click here.

2. How to apply
So there’s actually a different way to apply concealer than with just a brush! This is how I get the absolute most out of my concealer.
Here’s what you’re going to need for this:
- A small flat angled brush my favorite one is from elf + it’s super cheap.
- A damp beauty blender, to learn more about damp beauty blenders click here!
Start with blending the concealer with a small angled brush and spread it around till it’s halfway blended in! Once that’s done, you’re going to blend with a damp beauty blender. The reason why you want to use a damp beauty blender is that it helps with avoiding a cakey finish while at the same time getting rid of the streaky finish a brush gives you.
You’re going to notice that your skin and makeup it going to look a lot more seamless and blended with this technique. I LOVE using this hack for foundation!
3. Let is SIT!
One big thing to remember when working with concealer is to let it sit! Letting your concealer sit will allow for it to be able to cover more in a way with less product.
So when you’re applying cover the area where you want the most coverage, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, and blend with a damp beauty blender! During this time you can do your eyes or something else.
4. Eye Primer
Don’t have eye primer with you? That’s ok! use your concealer, and let it sit blend with a flat angled brush you’re going to get more coverage this way too. Once blended apply eyeshadow as you normally would.
5. Apply Concealer AFTER everything!
This is probably my favorite hack on this list! The idea of it is to basically apply your concealer after you’ve completed your whole routine. Allow me to explain! Apply concealer as you normally would after foundation but also apply it after you’ve done your makeup.
I find doing this helps with cleaning everything up, resulting in a brighter and neater finish too. Super good! Here is a link to a video where I walk through how to do this.
6. Cream Contour
Did you know that concealer can also be used as cream contour? To do this, make sure to purchase another concealer that is your contour shade! This is typically two-three shades darker than your skin tone.
Here is a video guide on how to use concealer as a cream contour.
7. More coverage!
Want more coverage? Concealer is here to help! To get the absolute max coverage you can from your concealer make sure to apply concealer not only after foundation but before.
When you do this, you’re able to cover a lot more, and it also creates a more even skin tone for your foundation. When applied before foundation you’ll find that there is a lot more coverage given.
8. Lifting your eyes
Did you know there is actually a way to lift your eyes when doing your makeup? here’s how! Note that this is a more minimal approach to applying concealer, but it works super well. Feel free to modify and add more if you want to.
- Apply a line of concealer under your eyes
- Follow with applying a line from your eye up to your temple.
- Blend first with the flat concealer brush and once it’s half blended use a damp beauty blender.
- And you’re done! you’ll notice that your eyes look super blended and lifted!

9. Setting Concealer with powder
Right after you apply concealer make sure to gently apply some loose setting powder onto your skin so that you can prevent creasing throughout the day. This hack is most beneficial for oily skin, because it helps with preventing the concealer from sliding off.
10. Eraser
Did you know that concealer can also act as an eraser? Messed up your eyeliner? Grab your concealer and a precise, flat brush! Apply some to the area that needs to be corrected and slowly work the concealer onto your skin. Boom! DIY eraser, pretty cool right?
I do this ALL the time and it’s honestly saved me a lot, 10/10 recommend it.
