What is patchy makeup?
Patchy makeup can be super annoying, but how do you determine what it is? It’s super easy to spot if you notice pilling, dryness, and an uneven texture on your skin, that’s patchy makeup! Also, if you have problems trying to blend it in.
1. Not prepping your skin
It’s super important to prep your skin before applying makeup so your skin has a fresh and clean base to work with! Not prepping your skin can result in patchy makeup because you’re not providing a proper base for your makeup.
Generally, skin prep entails:
- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser // Or any cleanser you use works too!
- Apply moisturizer and SPF // this helps with getting your skin ready for the makeup.
- Add primer // you don’t have to do this, but if you find that makeup glides off your skin or you want longer wear makeup, look into primer!

2. Dry Skin
One of the biggest causes of patchy makeup is dry skin! It’s no surprise, but dry skin will cause patchy makeup. To keep up with having hydrated skin make sure to use a gentle hydrating cleanser, and follow with a hydrating moisturizer. If you really struggle with dry skin look into using night creams, as they provide more hydration!
Some other things you can do:
- Face mist: Keep some face mist with you, so throughout the day you can easily give your skin a boost of moisture!
- Face masks: These can be either sheet masks or regular ones but using some moisturizing, hydrating face masks will be really beneficial for your skin!
3. Dry eyes!
If you’re struggling with patchy makeup under your eyes, it could be a sign of dry skin as mentioned above! Make sure to follow the things above, and look into implementing eye cream into your routine.
Make sure to gently apply the eye cream, but over time you should see results with your eyes feeling more hydrating and looking brighter! Right before applying makeup, make sure to apply your eye cream.
4. Powder makeup
Try using liquid and cream makeup products! And try switching up powder foundation (if you’re using that) to liquid. When looking for a makeup product, make sure it states that it’s hydrating so you get the best results. Personally, I have dry skin and have been using the Elf Hydrating Camo Concealer and it works wonderfully!
If you have dry skin use cream and liquid products, and oily skin powder makeup products. If you think about it… powder makeup and dry skin don’t work together.
5. Application product + streaky finish
Have patchy makeup? Sometimes a quick fix is all you need! Grab your beauty blender and soak it in water, make sure to squeeze as much water as you can out. Once done, dab the beauty blender all over the patchy area. After a few moments, you’ll notice your makeup looking a lot less streaky.

6. Another way to apply
Now, you can also try the other way where you use a stiff foundation brush to buff your makeup out! Doing this can result in a super flawless finish.
7. Foundation
Sometimes the foundation you use can be too heavy for your skin, resulting in it looking patchy and uneven. Try switching out your full coverage foundation for a lighter, medium foundation. If you’re looking to switch it up completely and look into something light-medium coverage I recommend skin tint!
8. Shut down powder makeup!
We all know how amazing powder can be but sometimes you have to limit it! If you find yourself packing on all the powder you can, try for one day to not apply as much. Patchiness is dryness, so it’s important to assess all areas of your routine to figure out what the problem is!
Next time when you do your makeup, apply a minimal amount of powder. If you bake, try lightly baking. See what happens!
9. Setting Spray
Using a good setting spray is key to having, flawless smooth skin that lasts all day! Make sure to use a good, long-lasting, and hydrating setting spray for your skin. This will ensure that your makeup lasts but also, helps with avoiding patchiness.

10. Too much
Applying too much product can be a huge sign too! if you find yourself applying too much, tone it down. I’d recommend starting out with a hydrated base and then applying small amounts of makeup to figure out what does and doesn’t work.
11. Sometimes… it’s the product
Sometimes…. when all else fails it’s the product. If you think that you’re doing everything correctly and haven’t had any problems in the past with patchy makeup it’s 99% going to be the new product you’re using. Try and think back on what you’ve recently implemented into your routine and if you think of something take it out of your routine and see how your makeup reacts!
