Oily skin can be difficult to manage, especially when it comes to your makeup! Here is the rundown on THE BEST makeup hacks for those with oily skin.
First up, wash your face
Before applying any type it’s super important to remember to wash your face. This makes your skin happy and clean, ready to combat the day under makeup!
Those with oily skin will find deep cleansing beneficial, as it helps with deeply removing oils that can cause clogged pores. Here’s a link to an article I found that will help you find some!

Primer! Primer! Primer
This is where most people tend to get confused, but it’s essential to use the correct primer for your skin type! Some tend to choose a random one that’s not suited for their skin type, which results in problems when it comes down to the finish of the makeup!
Oily skin should focus on primers that will give you a matte and poreless base to work with. This way, when you start applying your makeup you’ll already have a matte base, which will make the makeup less likely to slip off your face.

Makeup for your skin type
One of the most important hacks I have for you, and most of the time people tend to miss this! Not using the correct makeup for your skin type can explain why your makeup hasn’t been performing as well as it should.
Those with oily skin will react better to powder makeup products rather than cream and liquid ones. Looking into powder foundations, blushes, and eyeshadows will result in the best finish for you!
Don’t underestimate the power of powder!
If you struggle with lots of oily skin and you haven’t combatted it, look into powder! There are two types of powder. Let’s go over it.
Loose finishing powder: Loose finishing powder can either be luminous or matte. Those with oily skin will find finishing powder very beneficial, as it gets rid of oil and shine! If you have combo skin, finishing powder is perfect for you.
Finishing powder: This provides the same benefits, but instead, it’s sealed in a pan. Perfect for those wanting to control minimal to medium oil, looks natural and it feels like nothing is on your skin.
Personally, I’ve noticed better results with a mix of both, but if I’d have to choose one it would be loose finishing powder! My forehead gets super oily, and I use the elf HD powder to stop that excess oil.
Creating a proper routine for your skin
Making sure that you have a foolproof, and ready routine is super important too! Knowing what products do and don’t work will help you save time while getting ready too. I’ll link some videos below to help with creating a quick and easy makeup routine for those with oily skin if you need some extra help.

Products to keep with you on the go
This is another form of making sure that your makeup can combat the oil! Keeping finishing powder and a brush with you all the time is not functional. Keeping blotting papers or the Revlon roller product in your purse or bag can help with quickly minimizing the appearance of oil on the go!
The power of eyeshadow primer
Eyeshadow primers are PERFECT for those with oily skin, and here’s why! Oily skin causes makeup to shift and move throughout the day and that means it can also affect your eyeshadow.
The best way to avoid eyeshadow moving throughout the day is to make sure that you’re using an eyeshadow primer. Now, your eyeshadow will last all day and night!
Also, using powder eyeshadow will last the longest for oily skin.
Matte finishes all the way
When shopping for makeup it’s crucial to look for mattifying finishes to avoid the most oil you can! In order for this to happen, look for matte finishes and avoid dewy finishes. Most of the time, the finish the product provides will be labeled somewhere on the packaging and if you can’t find it, search it up.
Lighter layers are the best way to go
Light layers are always the best way to go. Packing too much on your skin will not be useful in any way and will result in a patchy and oily finish. Take your time, and remember to use lighter layers!
Setting Spray
Last but certainly not least, setting spray! When looking for a setting spray with oily skin it’s important to keep in mind that it should give you a completely matte finish. Not soft matte, that will give you a half matte finish! Fully matte is the way to go.
