We’ve all been there – you spend an hour or more carefully applying your makeup, and within a few hours, it starts to fade away. The result is frustrating, especially when you have a busy day ahead of you. If you’re someone who wants their makeup to last all day, you’re in the right place!
In this blog post, you’ll learn all the tips and tricks to help you keep your makeup looking fresh and fabulous from morning to night. Whether you have oily skin, dry skin, or combination skin, this has got you covered!
Set A Strong Base
It’s no surprise that in order for makeup to last all day, it’s crucial to setup a strong base. Doing so ensures your skin is prepped and ready to tackle the day with makeup. Before applying any makeup, make sure to always prep your skin. If you don’t know how don’t worry follow the steps below!
Skin Prep
The steps below are a general overview of what skin prep entails. If you have your own routine feel free to follow that!
- Start off fresh, wash your face: Using a gentle cleanser *or cleanser you’re currently using* massage onto your damp skin in circular motions. After, gently pat your skin dry.
- Next up, moisturizer: Hydration is key not only for skin health but also to preventing pilling and keeping your skin comfortable under makeup too.
- Finally, SPF: Whether in rain or shine, SPF is important. Apply SPF after moisturizer for best results, the other way can cause pilling. I love Supergoop, the formula is amazing and does not pill under makeup. It can be very annoying when that happens!

Primer
Now that your skin is prepped, let’s further prepare your skin with primer! Primer is great at giving a flawless, even base to work with since it fills up pores, bumpy textures, and small creases. Since it does an amazing job at prepping your skin, you’ll find that your makeup lasts longer.
I like to think of it as turning your skin into a “blank canvas” allowing makeup to be applied easier. Did you know the primer you use depends on your skin type? Let’s go over what’s best for you!
Dry Skin: Dry skin should focus on hydrating primers. This can help with preventing patchiness as well as pilling since this is the #1 problem those with dry skin have. Let’s say you’ve tried the hydrating ones and your makeup still comes off, try out a sticky primer.
Combo Skin: This one is a bit trickier because you’re not only catering to one skin type but two! Using two primers may work best for combo skin. When you implement two, one catered for each skin type you’ll find will look and work the best!
Oily Skin: Oily skin should focus on a matte and poreless primer. There are lot’s of ones out there which gives you just that! This way, you’ll start off with a matte base, making the makeup less likely to slip off your face. Primers that are also gripping and sticky will work perfectly because the makeup will stick to your skin.

Foundation
There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to foundation! Let’s go over exactly what this entails.
Long Wear Foundation
This is a thing?! Yes, it is and it’s important to implement this into your routine if you haven’t already. Using a long-wear foundation will have you set for 5+ hours with minimal touch-ups. From now on, before purchasing a foundation check the label for how many hours it’s designed to last.
Application
This is no secret either, but the way you apply your foundation matters! For best results, follow the steps listed below.
- Skin prep: Skin prep should be done, follow the steps above.
- Makeup tools: Use a foundation brush, this will make all the difference. If you’re not using a foundation brush this could be the reason you’ve been experiencing a completely different finish. My favorite foundation brush currently is the Ducare Round Foundation Brush #159.
- Application time: Now that we’ve established what to use, apply a small amount of foundation onto the back of your *clean* hand. This way you’re able to control the amount of foundation and it’s not a mess all at once.
- Continue: Move the brush in circular motions till it’s all blended in. *Also, if you have a vanity and are in front of lighting make sure to check natural light before moving on to the next steps.*
- Finishing Steps: When you’re done, grab a damp beauty blender and gently pat it all over your face. The reason for this is to remove the streaky finish a brush usually gives you. Make sure not to pat too hard or the beauty blender will soak in the foundation.
Makeup best for your skin type
Did you know different makeup types are suited for different skin types?! Shocking, I know! Knowing which makeup is suited for your skin type will entirely change your routine and the results you get.
Follow these for best results:
Dry Skin: Make sure you’re prioritizing cream and liquid makeup products. Once you implement these, you will see a fairly noticeable difference in how your makeup holds up and looks. These two are also great because it will prevent pilling and patchiness.
Combo Skin: Again, combo skin is tricky because it’s not one skin type but two! For instance, let’s say you have a super oily forehead but the rest of your face is dry. Only use powdered products on your forehead, except for your base products (foundation and concealer).
- If you find that your face gets very oily as the day goes on, it might be worth it to look into a powder foundation. This way, you’ll get coverage with a less oily finish.
Oily Skin: Those with oily skin will react better to powder makeup products rather than cream and liquid ones. Looking into powder foundations, blushes, and eyeshadows will result in the best finish for you!
Setting spray throughout routine
Literally a GAME CHANGER for anyone wanting their makeup to last all day! All you have to do is spray-setting mist as you go through your routine. I like to think of it as allowing the makeup to “melt” into your skin. Those with dry skin will find this to be a game changer as well because it rehydrates your skin allowing the makeup to blend easier.
Powder
Setting powder is a versatile product that has a great number of benefits. Powder prevents oil, shine, creasing, and much more as you progress the day. The powder you use will affect the results you get, here’s a quick rundown.
Loose Powder: Loose finishing powder can either be luminous or matte. Those with oily skin will find finishing powder very beneficial, as it gets rid of oil and shine! Finishing powder is super beneficial for oily skin, dry skin should stay away from it. If you have combo skin, finishing powder is perfect for you.

Pressed powder: Pressed powder is a type of finishing powder that will blur skin giving you a flawless finish. It’s commonly applied right after foundation and concealer to ensure makeup does not move as the day goes on.
There are two ways to apply pressed powder, let’s go over both.
After foundation for a flawless finish: While your foundation is still wet, grab either a powder puff or makeup brush with your powder. With either, gently pat the powder on top of your face. After a few seconds, you’ll notice your foundation turns matte.
When you’re done: After you are done with all of your makeup, grab your makeup brush and stipple the powder wherever you want to prevent oil.

Long wear formula
As mentioned above, long-wear formulas are the way to go if you struggle with longevity! Before purchasing any makeup product, make sure to check that will last more than a few hours. Generally, cream and liquid makeup (blushes, bronzers, etc.) are not as long wear compared to powdered makeup.
Keep touch-up items with you
Keeping the essentials will be extremely useful. Before you leave, make sure you have your lip color, blush, and powder with you! Blush is the first thing to slip off your face, so it’s important to always keep it with you.
Lock in that cream makeup
If you’ve been using an entirely cream makeup look, no wonder it’s been slipping off! Whenever you use cream makeup it’s crucial to follow up with a powder product. This “locks in” the cream makeup.
Let’s say you regularly wear cream blush and don’t lock it in. From now on, lock that cream blush in with a powder blush. Try to find a shade similar to the cream one if you can, or use whatever you have! Do the same thing with all other cream/liquid makeup except for foundation and concealer.
Eyeshadow Base
Use eyeshadow every day?! Listen up! From now on, start using an eyeshadow base. This will make all the difference in how your eyeshadow holds up throughout the day.
Before applying any eyeshadow apply a tiny amount of eyeshadow base. It will start you off with an even and prepared base for the eyeshadow!
Lipstick
Last, but certainly not least is lipstick! Lipsticks is a great option for keeping color on your lips without constantly having to retouch. If you don’t want the color to be too harsh blot the lipstick onto your lips, and if you want a bold lip apply it as usual.
Making your makeup last all day does not have to be a daunting task! This seems like a lot, but even implementing a few of these will show results.
