Welcome or welcome back to the Beginner’s Guide to Makeup! A crucial issue we need to address head-on is the alarming rate of makeup overconsumption that has infested the beauty community in recent years. Even as a brand promoting makeup, it’s important we talk about this! The real issue lies not in the promotion of makeup but in the misleading perception of the number of products you “think” you need.
A Word from Our Founder, Ariana: Makeup Overconsumption
Hello, Ariana here – I felt it necessary to share my thoughts on overconsumption in the beauty industry. A quick browse through our website will reveal that only a tiny fraction of our content promotes a multitude of products or trends.
Our mission at the Beginner’s Guide to Makeup is to enhance your skills and guide you in discovering what works best for YOU, without the need to purchase an overwhelming number of products or spend a fortune trying to figure it out.
However, when you’re scrolling endlessly on the internet and are bombarded with thousands of different products, it’s all too easy to feel left out and give into the allure of buying the latest product.
As a teenager myself, I understand that my peers are completely engrossed in these trends and products. However, I firmly believe in the principle of quality over quantity, and that should be your mantra too!
Notice that any product I recommend, which I personally love, will be consistently recommended multiple times. I’m highly selective when it comes to my makeup.
Take your time to research products that you’ll end up loving and using every day, instead of buying 50 foundations until you find the perfect one. And, remember don’t purchase a new foundation until you finish the one you have!
In my view, it makes little sense to spend 34 dollars on a lip balm. Who can really tell the difference? If you find yourself thinking you need these products, remind yourself that you don’t. Trends are fleeting, and in three days there’s going to be a new 50 dollar lip balm everyone is raving about.
So, How Do I Combat Makeup Overconsumption?
The easiest way is by limiting the amount of time you spend on social media. There are also options to see less of specific content, so consider that as well.
Another way, which is more challenging, is to continue viewing the content but resist the urge to buy.
It all boils down to self-control and discerning between a want and a necessity.
