First up, Skin Prep
No matter what time of year it is skin prep is crucial! Prepping your skin allows for happy skin, and long-lasting makeup.
Follow the steps below for best results: (I go more in-depth throughout this section.)
- Wash your face: It doesn’t matter which cleanser you use, as long as it works for your skin you’re good. Pat dry when done.
- Moisturize: During the summer it’s crucial to keep your skin hydrated. I LOVE the Elf Cosmetics Happy Hydration Facial Cream.
- SPF: I know it seems like a lot of steps, but SPF is the most essential thing on this list. This is because it’s summer, and important to keep your skin prepared for the sun! After you apply moisturizer follow with SPF. I have found Supergoops Sunscreen layers fantastically with makeup.
- Primer: This is not a necessary step but if you find yourself prone to makeup melting off your face it’s a good idea to look into primer. Learn more about primer and how to use it here!
SPF
Make sure to apply SPF and reapply every few hours! The reason why SPF is vital is that it protects your skin from the sun’s harmful UV Rays. Consistently wearing sunscreen will help reduce the risk of getting burned, skin damage, and skin cancer. Damaging your skin in the heat is not fun, and applying SPF will prevent it.
Primer
Primer was briefly outlined above, but here’s a more in-depth explanation to primer!
You may find that don’t need primer during the winter months, but in the summer it may be necessary for certain people. Don’t worry! I’m going to go over each skin type and what’s best for YOU.
Oily Skin: Sticky primers are the best for the summer. No one enjoys makeup melting off in the heat! Oily skin is prone to this. Using a sticky primer will be the perfect solution to preventing this because the makeup will stick to your skin.
Dry Skin: Prioritize hydrating primers! If you find that your regular moisturizer isn’t cutting it, look into some hydrating primers to give you an extra boost. Sometimes that’s all you need!
Makeup Advice
Long wear formulas
During the heat, long-wear formulas are a must. Makeup is prone to not staying intact. Implementing long-wear formulas will give you a chance at lasting makeup. This especially matters when it comes to foundations, concealers, and base makeup.
Powder makeup / Cream and Liquid makeup
Using the correct makeup for your skin type is even more crucial during the summer months! Not using the correct makeup can lead to melting and not getting the most out of your makeup.
Dry Skin: Cream and liquid makeup is excellently suited for dry skin. You’ll find that your makeup with last longer and won’t get patchy.
Oily Skin: Powder makeup works best, and will work to prevent oil and shine as the day goes on.
Combo Skin: This is a little bit trickier because you’re not working with one skin type but two. Play around with all 3 and adjust your routine to what works best for you.

Setting spray/mist
Setting sprays are INCREDIBLY useful during the summer months! They lock in your makeup and refresh your skin. Recently my favorite one has been the Elf Cosmetics Dewy Coconut Setting Mist. This is the ideal product that quickly refreshes your skin without ruining your makeup.
As you go through makeup routine
This is one of my FAVORITE pieces of advice, but as you go through your routine use setting spray. Those with dry skin will find this to be a lifesaver! I have particularly dry skin and occasionally by the time I’m on blush, my skin is completely dry and makeup is difficult to blend.
I spray some of this, and bam! My makeup is easy to blend and I can move through my routine much faster.
Keep it light
During the summer don’t pack too much onto your skin! This is what will cause the makeup to melt and become patchy. Instead, keep it light and look for formulas that are comfortable but provide coverage.
This summer I plan on using the Elf Halo Glow as my form of coverage! It’s light and for more coverage add some skin tint or foundation with it.
Makeup With SPF In It
Even if you have SPF on your skin, it can be useful to use makeup with SPF. This will make a small difference compared to standard SPF but will help in the long run to protect your skin from sun damage.
Waterproof and water-resistant mascara
No one likes it when mascara smudges and melts off! To prevent this waterproof and water-resistant mascaras are the way to go. Especially if you plan on being in areas that are warmer or have lots of water this is the answer. The only con is these can be damaging to your lashes, so be careful!
Blotting papers
Are you on the go a lot and know that your skin gets super oily? A quick fix is to keep blotting papers with you. This way, you’ll be able to quickly remove oil and shine without having to carry touch-up makeup with you.
SPF Lip Balm
Even though your face is protected, your lips should be too! Incorporate SPF Lip Balm to keep your lips protected and comfortable.
Eyeshadow Primer
Are you someone who loves wearing eyeshadow? If so, integrating eyeshadow primer into your routine is a must for the summer. You’ll notice it’s much easier to apply eyeshadow and it’ll last longer in the warmth.
